Torrents: (A dummies guide to how to download them)

Bittorrent is method of downloading large files off of the internet. Its fairly simple to understand the basic fundamentals.

First off you need a Bittorrent Client (program). This program will allow you to download torrents to your computer. A good Bittorrent Client for Mac is Transmission one for Windows is BitTorrent. After you have downloaded and installed the program you can start downloading torrents. Torrents are little small flies that essentially act as a tag. They tell your bittorrent client where to go to find the file that you wish to download. All you need to do is download the torrent file and then open that file with you bittorent client (program). Once this is done wait a few seconds and you should see that the file you just opened in bittorent should begin to download information.

A good place to find bittorrent files is a website called The Pirate Bay though this is not the only one. It contains a wealth of torrent files and uses a simple google like search engine to find them for you. All you simply must do is put in a key word and it will find torrents matching your search. You can also browse through different categories such as top 100 downloads or music search. Simply click on one of the torrents listed after you have entered a search and you will be taken to a page where you will find a green link that says Download. Click this and the torrent file will be downloaded. This file is then going to be put into your Bittorrent client.

Sometimes you will find files downloading faster the others, this is because there are more users downloading that file as well. To keep this simple I will be brief and only tell you what you need to know. Torrent files have what is known as Strength or Health, this is based off of there seed to leech ratio. All you need to worry about is whether the file has enough seeds. Seeds will be abbreviated with an "S". Generally speaking to download information all you need is atleast one seed however the more the better. The more the seeds out weigh the leeches the better, its better because it means you will download information faster.

So here is an overview of what you need to do to download your first torrented file.
Steps:
  1. Download a bittorrent client (program). Either Transmission for Mac or Bittorrent for Windows.
  2. Download a torrent from a bittorrent tracking site. *if you would like a torrent to test out first here is one you may use Chris Cadenas Photos From Patagonia Trekking.
  3. Open the torrent with the a bittorrent client (program).
  4. Wait for downloading to begin.
  5. Be patient different file sizes may take longer then others.
  6. Once download is completed enjoy the file, and congratulations on downloading your first torrent.
Please feel free to ask any questions, you can ask them right in the comments section if you like.

Play SNES games on a Mac with a Wiimote

Emulators are cool, most people would agree. But playing an emulator with a keyboard just isn't the same as a controller. The best is playing it with a controller, and what better controller for a SNES emulator then the wireless Wiimote. This is a toutorial on how to play a SNES emulator on a mac with a Wiimote.

Step 1:

For this tutorial you will need to download a few programs. The first is SNES emulator for mac called Snes9X. You will also need the program DarwiinRemote. After downloading and installing these free programs you will be able to continue the tutorial.

Step 2:
The next step is connecting your Wiimote to your computer using DarwiinRemote. The Steps are actually fairly straight forward and presented to you in the bottom white box of the program. You will need a bluetooth connection for you to connect your Wiimote. Make sure that your blue tooth settings in you preference pane are set to discoverable. After sucessfully connecting your Wiimote and playing around with its features you can continue the tutorial.

Step 3:
You will find out if you go to DarwiinRemotes preference pane that there is a key mapping section. You can follow the mapping that I used With these three Pictures or you can create your own. (The Keyboard Layout is from the Configure Keyboard preference pane in SnesX9, it can be found at Config>Configure Keyboard. The other key mapping preference pane is from DarwiinRemote.)

Below is the configurations pictures for the wiimote that assumes you want to play with the wiimote in the horizontal holding position.

The Pictures:

Picture 1:

Picture 1
The blue boxed configurations should correlate with the blue box configurations in Picture 2. The Red Box configurations should correlate with the red box configurations of Picture 2. The green box is provided to show you that you can save multiple key mappings with the add button. This will be useful if you want to use the Wiimote for other things.

Picture 2:
Picture 2
Look at picture ones configurations and match.

Picture 3:
Picture 3
Picture 3 Will explain the logic behind the blue boxes configurations.

If you have successfully mapped your controls this is what the Wiimote button layout for SnesX9 should be like.

(when holding sideways)
D pad up = up
D pad down = down
D pad left = left
D pad right = right
Home button = return (aka start on SNES controller)
Button 1 = a button (on SNES controller)
Button 2 = b button (on SNES controller)
Button + = Left trigger (on SNES controller)
Button - = Right trigger (on SNES controller
Button A = X button (on SNES controller)
Button B = Y button (on SNES controller)

Here is a video of my own successful endavor in controlling a SNES emulator with a Wiimote.

Subliminal Advertisement On Youtube

People hear all the time about subliminal advertising, how there is product placement in movies and in television shows. We go about our lives completely oblivious to the adds that are in front of us and we succumb to its power. It is most obvious to us when we choose Coke over Pepsi or vice versa depending on different people. It's fascinating how much power subliminal messages can have over us. Just recently I was looking for a documentary on Neanderthals and I came across a video on Youtube that seemed normal at first. It was a clip about Neanderthals from a BBC documentary, however three fourths of way into the clip a split second flash of a Dodge automobile logo popped up. At first I was surprised by the sudden change and didn't realize why I suddenly thought of Dodge. I then rewound the video to still frame the shot. With this I discovered the logo in its entirety. This led me to wonder whether or not this was some sort of new add campaign that companies were doing, where they were paying people to put up random video clips on Youtube with subliminal advertisements. I then figured that this also could be just something that Dodge was doing on tv because the documentary was a television show. Never the less this subliminal advertising worked, and gave me a better understanding of its power.
